Canaries were used in the early coal mining years to help warn miners of deadly methane gases. The canary would die quickly when exposed to methane and was a warning to miners to get out quickly. Today, the pin symbolizes the tragic deaths of many and to bring about awareness of the need to legislate for safe and toxin free working conditions.
